What is Chi-gong?

Chi-gong, pronounced “chee-gong,” is a form of body/mind therapy and a way of life that is based on the belief in Qi (pronounced chee). Qi is the life energy that is believed in traditional Oriental medicine to flow through all living things (this includes humans, animals, plants, etc.). This Chinese holistic system of health includes exercise and meditation, diet, breathing techniques, massage therapy, and more to create and maintain a healthy balance and flow of Qi within the body. Chi-gong is not a form of therapy that is used as a temporary or immediate fix for health, though. Instead, it is a way of life.

What does Chi-gong consist of?

There are two main forms of Chi-gong: the first is known as dynamic/active Chi-gong, and the second is tranquil/passive Chi-gong. More information on these two forms of Chi-gong is below:

Dynamic Chi-gong (also known as dong gong) is the portion of Chi-gong that includes noticeably active physical movement. This includes exercises, yoga postures, etc. Dynamic Chi-gong is the most popular and the most practiced form of Chi-gong. It is the form in which the body is in obvious movement, but the mind is quiet, peaceful and at rest.

Tranquil Chi-gong (also known as jing gong) is the part of Chi-gong in which the entire body is still, but the mind is alert and actually paying attention to the Qi and its movement. Tranquil Chi-gong includes forms of therapy such as meditation, breathing techniques, etc.
