Bowen Technique

In the world of massage there abound many techniques and therapies. While most of these have originated from traditional Eastern medicines, the Bowen technique actually originated in Australia.

What exactly is the Bowen technique of massage therapy?

The Bowen technique consists of a series of specific light moves across tendons, muscles and fascia throughout the body. The therapist uses thumbs and fingers to make the moves and applies what is sometimes termed “eyeball pressure.” This term means merely that the pressure used with the hands is no more than would be comfortable when applied to the eyeball.

These very light movements on the skin are not invasive or heavy, but are said to have the same healing effects on the body as many techniques that are. The goal of the Bowen technique is to begin the body’s natural healing process and let the body heal itself.

How is the Bowen technique beneficial?

The Bowen technique of massage therapy can help to ease discomfort in tense muscles as well as be preventative in many types of illnesses. Since the Bowen technique utilizes such a light touch, this technique is one of the safest massage therapies a person can receive. It has been proven safe on babies, adults and animals. In most massage therapies, there are certain people who should not be given the treatment due to health-related issues. The Bowen technique is different from these in that there are very few, if any, illnesses or health issues that this massage therapy could impact negatively.

Another important difference between the Bowen technique and many other forms of massage therapy is the instant gratification. Many patients will experience an almost instantaneous relief of medical conditions. While this does not always happen to patients, it is almost always true that the patient does not need to receive the Bowen technique for the long term. Instead, most patients will experience rapid relief and healing after only a few sessions.

What happens during a Bowen technique session?

Most sessions will involve the patient lying on a treatment couch or a bed for treatment. The Bowen technique is another of the many massage therapies that can be done through loose-fitting clothing (although some patients or practitioners may prefer the treatment to be applied directly to the skin). The Bowen technique practitioner will focus on one group of muscles at a time, and then will leave the room for at least two minutes to allow the body to begin healing itself. Once the practitioner returns, they will resume the Bowen technique, treating the next set of muscles.

What are the downfalls of receiving a Bowen technique session?

The biggest drawback to receiving the Bowen technique is the detoxification that the body may experience after treatment. While it doesn’t happen to everyone, many patients may experience any of the following symptoms of detoxification during the few days following a treatment: nausea, headaches, body temperature changes, or mild changes in the body’s waste elimination.

If you are experiencing any health problems within the body the Bowen technique is one worth considering. Since results can be noticed after a few sessions, it will enable the patient to determine whether this is the right type of massage for them more quickly than with some techniques. This makes the experience less expensive which can make it more enjoyable and effective. So to relax and experience the benefits that only massage can offer, schedule your Bowen technique session today.
